Bangor Department of Work and Pensions

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) was a new design and build by Gladman Homes adjacent to the Menai Straight Bridge in North Wales. We tendered and won the contract to design and fit the interior of the complete building. This included all of the dry lining, partitioning, suspended ceilings, internal joinery and even computer floors. This is to fit in with the Jobcentres new scheme where High-tech equipment was to be installed in over 700 sites in order to make it easier for people to find work.

The project was made more difficult by its location; our staff faced long commutes and therefore had to be accommodated in surrounding travel lodges. We also had to work side by side with other contractors who were also pushing to finish their work on time. As it was such a large project we were dealing with up to 5 deliveries a day for materials. This and all other work was managed on site by our directly employed site manager and operatives. However local labour was also employed on the project to cut down on travelling costs and overheads.

Despite the atrocious weather which our workmen faced the project was finished on time to a high standard. This has helped the DWP to continue to run the UK’s biggest public service department which deals with over 22 million claimants and customers both efficiently and effectively.
